This attractive and pulpy fruit with a pleasant flavor is mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata and comes from the district of Malda in West Bengal. These trees are planted above the flood level in light and sandy soil. Its cultivation influences the economy to a high level. It includes the export of proprietary products made uniquely with their trade secrets. It has been observed that in the early stages of domestication of the trees, the fruits are small and fibrous without much flesh. The Portuguese and the Mughals, the rulers then selected and grew the best varieties for generations to obtain the best of all the characteristics.
