Tirur Betel Leaf (Tirur Vettila)

Tirur betel leaf is cultivated in Tirur and nearby areas of Malappuram district of Kerala. Generally, betel leaves are used for tobacco purposes but this leaf is special owing to presence of a high content of total chlorophyll and protein in fresh leaves. The leaves also have a high anti-oxidant capacity and high phenol content. These leaves also have high eugenol oil content thereby bestowing it with better anti- fungal properties and is used for medicinal purposes.
