This attractive fruit mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata is pulpy with a pleasant flavor. It comes from the district of Malda in West Bengal. The trees are planted above the flood level in light and sandy soil. Its cultivation influences the economy to a high level. It includes the export of proprietary products made uniquely with their trade secrets. It has been observed that in the early stages of domestication of the trees, the fruits were small, fibrous without much flesh. The Portuguese and the Mughals, the rulers then had selected and grew the best varieties for generations to obtain the best of all the characteristics.
