Applique work originates from Pipli, a village in the district of Puri. The work is confined to people of Darji (tailor) caste with surnames of Mahapatra and Maharana of Pipli. The key features of the appliqué work are its chain stitch, patchwork done manually by hemstitch, the carefully crafted motifs of different designs of figurative like animals, birds, geometrical and diamonds/motifs; and trees and leaves. Aspecific design is used with a combination of embroidery, different stitches and a floral motif called Surya Mukshi” (sunflower) at the centre of the Samiana / Chandua (Canopies).
