Pattamadai Pai (Pattamadai mat) is named with reference to the Pattamadai, a small village in Tiruinelveli district of Tamil Nadu. It is the traditional home to the unique tradition of mat weaving from korai grass grown on the banks of river Tamiraparani. It is is now also being practised by other nearby villages. The Pattamadai mats, made of grass are extremely delicate and highly valued. They are made in numerous colours, designs and come in various sizes to serve different purposes. For centuries, Pattamadai is a world-renowned centre for the production of exquisite quality silk mats, and some of the super fine mats could be folded like a saree. The mats of Pattamadai are world famous. A hand-woven superfine silk mat was sent to Queen Elizabeth-II on her coronation in 1953. The skill of the artisans of Pattamadai has impressed many dignitaries from various countries.
