The Uppada style of sarees from Kothapalli Mandal of East Godhavari district in Andhra Pradesh is known for its uniqueness. The double-sided weaving is so intricate that the design cannot be felt as it blends with the weaving. The weaving, done on a variety of fabrics varying from cotton to silk, is so delicate that a saree can be folded into a small match box. Initially, the weaving was done exclusively only for the queens. After the fall of kingdoms, the weavers lost their royal patronage which led to a decline in the weaving. However, in 1985, the Weavers Service Centre, Vijayavada conducted training programs to revitalize the weaving and this has passed on from generation to generation.
