In the beginning, the Mizos did not practise the use of colored yarn, and so the cloth produced as a simple coarse white piece. These were called “Puanngo”. With the passage of time the Mizos introduced colors to their cloth. Pawndum is first kind of cloth which used colors in it. Pawndum consisted of red and black colors alternately spanning the cloth. Pawndum these days contains six colour combinations such as red, green, blue, pink, yellow, and black in which red and black colors must be most prominent. The type of yarn used in Pawndum is mainly cotton. Acrylic and silk yarns are now also incorporated. Pawndum has a deep ethnic root and cultural significance. From marriage to death Pawndum has a special role to play in the life of the Mizos.
