Udupi “Mattu Gulla” brinjal variety is particularly grown in Mattu village, including surrounding villages like Kote, Innanje, Kaipunjalu and Uliyprugoli in the coastal city of Udupi, Karnataka. The growing belt of this variety is just 250-300 meters away from the western coast. The brinjal is very unique to the climatic condition of the region. This brinjal variety is ovoid in shape, slightly pentamerous at the base and has small spines on the stalk. It is green in color with light green / white stripes. Its seeds are white, flat and numerous. This variety is less astringent than other brinjal varieties. After cooking the fruit pieces retain their firmness, and are smooth without any fibrous material. It has a special flavor and is useful in traditional food preparation.
